I chose the Second Grinnell Voyage which starts in New York and travels all over Greenland because I really like American History out of all of the histories especially since a lot of voyages are more European based. I also chose Grinnell Voyages because it was concentrated to one area so it was very easy to focus on and make the assignment look neat and it also had a good amount of points that I was able to cover to whole voyage in my assignment and I did not have to cut some out which I did not want to do. I also did not know a lot of Greenland prior to this assignment and now through pictures I used in the Story Map I am able to see the beauty that it holds.
I believe that the map I used was actually really interesting because much like the voyage which only focused on the top half of the world, the map is only accurate from the top half as well. It has the New England area bigger than Florida and the bottom half. What I think is very telling is that in a sense that shows the significance and power that the New England area held compared to everywhere else. Florida is a really big state but the power it held was minuscule. It worked for my project because I was focusing on the New England area and above but if I was focusing on voyages in the south and South American this would not be an accurate map to use.
The georeferencing of the map makes it more accessible to everyone around, especially younger kids. It makes it easier to pinpoint each voyage stop and then learn without having to read everything you do not care to know. I make it easier to visualize the voyage especially with the use of the map that overlays it. It helps the reader understand the voyage the way Grinnell understood it while also getting accurate information for the modern map used for the georeferencing. I think the digital former can almost devalue to journey in which Grinnell was on by making it almost look easier because to us modern maps are 100% accurate but back in the day everything was basically a guess. These people who went on these voyages were very brave.
In the book by Sara Caputo, the reason why voyages were so popular was because of discovery, making a name for yourself and helping your country conquer new land. I remember in class how secretive these maps were to countries because it was something no one else had. Nowadays, maps are not kept a secret and they are publicly accessible to anyone and that's probably the best thing to come out of technology is the accessibility. GIS builds off these lived experiences and allows others to experience these voyages even if they don't ever get to take a voyage in their lifetime. It takes the ocean from being some big secret to a public place everyone can enjoy.
